I watched the anime before I read the manga. Some of the characters and scenes were hilarious but I agree with you no one should have to be treated like that and for so long a period to be loved.

That's true. Irie -kun is a horrible person for treating Kotoko like garbage, and Kotoko on the other hand shouldn't have allowed herself to be treated like that. The way Irie treats her is so cringe - worthy even at this point when they are already husband and wife.
the truth of the matter is that, their marriage was an accident. irie -kun was all ready to kick Kotoko under the bus and marry the rich daughter of a businessman to save his father's company. Irie -kun just overheard that Kotoko might even marry that other guy ealier than him.... that fact rankled his ego, and out of nowhere, he proposed to Kotoko...... but, he was bamboozled to marry her immediately.
He really does loves Kotoko but is hard on her. He knows it and so does she. But they do truly love one another and jealousy is new to him. He didn't marry Chris because it wouldn't be fair to her that he was in love with someone else. He had to be true to himself. He has loved Kotoko since Romance Village when he snuck that kiss in while she slept.
Yeah, but that kind of attitude/personality isn't something you should have when marrying somebody, though i do agree the anime was funny sometimes. Just because he loves her gives him no right to treat her the way he has so far. She's basically been a living doormat for him ever since they met, except now, she's a fancy door mat: interesting for a while but gets boring. Either way, he's always walking over her
It is sad the author passed away before it was totally over though.
In the anime him as a father looked more loving towards Kotoko and actually treated her as a loving wife. There were not enough episodes to form a conclusion that the Naoki Irie as a father completely changed but with the manga being incomplete and the anime at an end our imagination will have to do. ╮(￣▽￣)╭ I could never be with someone who treated me as if I had no brain activity
please don't do it. kotoko has no self esteem. she's-- what the summary had said and even more -- extremely stupid. she's creepy, she stalks him, she let's him treat her like garbage. She has no dignity as a human being and she lets him walk all over her. absurdly, after months of so called dating, they get married. she's clingy and annoying. If I had ever seen or met her in real life I'd slap her across the face and give her a reality check. I don't know how this manga has such high ratings. (〜￣△￣)〜 even twilight has a better love story
