omg im literally doing the same thing haha!!
but i was thinking this might be related to sisyphus before he got the punishment from the gods
there is a story wherein sisyphus tricked hades something about the chain (maybe same chain/ring that was given by guwon) that disrupted hades from guiding the souls to the underworld.
so maybe guwon is some kind of form of hades and teacher is sisyphus
i dunno just want to share some theories hehe

sisyphus actually tricked thanatos (god of death) with the chains, not hades (god of hells) but yeah the theories are so interesting.
since guwon is the one who gifted the chain to the teacher i’m thinking that he may be the allegory for sisiphus, tricking the teacher. but then again the teacher escaped death too just like sisyphus…
i guess we’ll have to wait to know more (and sorry if my sentences aren’t that good, english isn’t my first language)

Ooh thanks for the correction!
Someone also commented that the ring might be related to Dante's inferno and they currently in hell. I think that really checks out because and as I mentioned in their comment, in ch 1, guwon welcomed the teacher and called their place as the other side of hell
Also when the town doctor explained the place to the teacher (ch2), he drew the place as circular and described the place like a pyramid. Kinda similar to dante's circles of hell
(May contain spoiler)
Ok I've done some research about what does sisyphus mean, so according to mr. Google, its a mythology about punishing Sisyphus by making him immortal and giving him a task which is rolling a boulder for eternity in the underworld, he is known to be cunning and trickster for cheating death as to why the gods punishes him. So what if they're in hell and guwon is the "hound" or guarding them.
