What is happening

Okay but why are most people on this site so so weird. Is it because everyone's in a constant state of horniness? If I read a story that has 0.5% thought put into it most comments are confused and can't understand the plot unless repeatedly explained to them. I get that might be because most aren't native speakers but it's so frequent that I see people misunderstand simple plot points. Is it because most are too young to be on this site? But being a teenager doesn't excuse having poor reading comprehension, most teenagers are smart. Most people also can't understand that a character can be gray (I'm not talking about downright rapists and abusers ofc, I mean characters who have inner conflict and might lash out). Characters can either be red or green flag, no in between. If there's conflict between two main characters everyone's just trying to pick sides instead of understanding that two opposing perspectives can be valid. Is it because most BL is really poorly written and people are used to slop? But the thing that shocked me most and prompted me to write this is how much rape is fetishized. I can ignore that and move on but reading people complain that they couldn't masturbate to a rape scene because it was too gruesome was just wild to me. There's plenty of material that presents rape as pleasurable so why can't they keep their brain rot to those stories? I've read people wish a rapist and his victim ended up together in a horror psychological work where the rapist dies in the end. Is it because rape is so romanticized that most of us can't tell the difference anymore? I have so many questions. I promise I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm genuinely confused. What is happening??

Oh, I've been thinking about this too, but on batoto instead of mangago. Whenever I read something with plot over there and the romance takes several steps back for a chapter or two, the comments are either "too much text to read", "I snored" or "I don't understand anything". I had to remind myself most people read BL for the romance and the smut, they don't want anything else and I respect that. In this case I think they should drop the overly complicated stories and look for something more suitable for them and their taste. I personally truly appreciate complicated BL only because the author's love for their story shines brightly in details. It's obvious they have a clear idea for the storyline, they know exactly what they want to do and I love to see it. You can feel the passion, time and effort put into that story.

And regarding people not understanding characters, I feel you. I noticed this is a problem with every genre and every type of media. People don't have patience for development anymore, for characters to have their arcs, for a story to unfold. They want all the answers right away, everything on a silver platter. I see this in anime reactions especially. If they don't have the entire story told in the very first episode, then "it doesn't make any sense". Stories are consumed so differently these days and I honestly can't get used to it.

Thank you for your engagement with my comment. I honestly had low hopes of getting any insightful comments but yours has helped. I also respect people only reading for romance and smut. I enjoy a turn-your-brain off steamy romance that doesn't require much emotional labour every once in a while but I mostly love reading stories that actually have thought and heart put into them. For me it's the either/or mentality that I find boggling. A story has to either be brainless and smutty or SFW with heavy plot. I respect people preferring the former but it doesn't make those comments any less frustrating, especially since there's no shortage of BL that falls under that category. I guess that might explain why Shounen Ai has better plot and storytelling in general.

I personally don't watch anime so I wasn't aware of how prevalent this is. I'm currently reading a manhwa that's plot heavy with only 1 season out and 2 more to go. One of the commenters dropped it because according to them nothing makes sense and none of the plot lines were resolved. Like obviously? There are still at least 80 more chapters planned but they couldn't handle everything not being spoon fed to them within the first 40. There was also was a whole war in the comment section with people picking sides based on which character is the right when both of their reactions are so valid and them behaving any other way wouldn't even make sense. It wasn't until a commenter wrote an essay long explanation of why the characters' behavior is natural basically babying the readers that all the fighting stopped. A huge part of enjoying fiction for me is the discussion that follows, but when most people are just going feral over the sex scenes, being impatient with development, or too busy bashing one character while defending the other it just gets so boring.

Damn, I had no idea my comment went through. When I left it I couldn't see it so I just assumed mangago hated me and deleted it, haha.

I was reading this manhwa. The MCs are enemies, one of them murdered the family of the other years ago for political reasons, this is mentioned in the very first panel and what caught me off guard was people complaining after a few chapters that there's no fluff. I was genuinely surprised that there were individuals out there who read all that messed up, violent exposition and still expected the MCs to treat each other nicely. The trope of "enemies to lovers" is inherently toxic and those who seek this kind of stories should be fully aware of what they're getting into, but somehow they aren't aware. Somehow they expect the enemies to be kind to each other.

The ML in that story is toxic, of course, he's someone who survived a lot of battles and was given a lot of orders, so smart, cunning and ruthless, he's a pretty incredible man when it comes to doing his job and avoiding getting assassinated, but all the readers could do was swear and wish him a painful death because he isn't a kind-hearted guy as a high-ranked official in the 1400s Korea's government. So... no one took the historical and political context into consideration while reading this? He obviously won't be kind-hearted. He's going to be fcked in the head, merciless and ready to cut heads off. The man is a warrior and has a mentality to match. He won't behave like a high school boy.

People are reading enemies to lovers, but they don't want the toxic enemies part. They are reading historical, but they don't want the history part. They are reading a thriller, but they skip all the investigation details because "too long, didn't read". They seek realistic stories, but any slightly flawed, complex character makes them rage in the comments.

I don't know. I feel you when it comes to discussions. When I find a good story and I want to talk about it, all I can do is yell into void.

I think when people say they want to read "enemies to lovers" most of the time they just mean "rivals to lovers" or "mildly antagonistic banter to lovers" like characters who are competitive with each other and are occasionally mean. I see that a lot with the novels I read where most books marketed as "enemies to lovers" are about workspace or school rivals. Also the manhwa you mentioned sounds interesting. Would you mind sharing the title?

Yeah, fiction has become so trope-nizied people can't make the difference anymore.

I was talking about Steel Under Silk. Trigger warning for r*pe in particular. I'm not up to date with it so I don't know how things developed, but as far as I read, yeah, it's f*ked, but it makes sense that it's f*ked and I think that's what I appreciate about it. The dynamic between the protagonists and their personalities are fitting, considering the time period, their environments, circumstances and all. I genuinely don't know how some readers expected anything else. It helps that the author is fully aware of what they're writing and it's all done with a plan in mind.

If you ever read it and feel like discussing it, feel free to send me a DM. Do people use DMs here? No idea. I never talked to someone on this website.

I haven't used DMs on this site since 2016 when I was in high school, don't even remember who I talked to or why tbh. I have no idea but since it's a feature I'm sure people use it. I'll follow you on my main account since this one is just an alt for random rants and to vent some frustration, lol. Never expected I'd get any meaningful interactions from here I thought I'd just be talking to myself. Since you think it's well thought out I'll definitely read it when I can find the time.
