you do understand that the low immigration rate is due to the deep rooted xenophobia and racism in japan? yea villainizing the country isn't good bc every country has its own problems but people should still criticize it. that's how change happens. even in countries like usa that have better representation (kinda), it didn't happen out of the blue. calling that stuff out is the first step.

See but that’s so hypocritical, because there are countries like South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, and China, that have things like religious persecution, slavery, and female genocide, but I don’t see us fucking making a stink about that. Criticize them, make a change there, Japan does have heave roots in xenophobia but at least their crime rate is relatively low, and they aren’t actively killing foreigners. I truly don’t understand. Why is it we care about things that aren’t actively harming people, meanwhile in women in Pakistan are experiencing “honor killings” and if you don’t know what that is look it up.

bc ppl read mangas so they mention the whitewashing?? like the fact that other countries are shittier, doesn't make japan an utopia. like yea usa might be the most progessive for let's say queer peeps but there is still discrimination so people still protest. and yea whitewashing is harmless compared to genocide but it's still a problem. what's with the whataboutism?? you seem like one of the guys who say "but what about xyz", when any wonen's issue is brought up. like yea that's a problem but so is this. and dw i know what honor killings are, considering my cousin was honor killed for being gay (thankfully im abroad now)
Hhhhh
White washing in anime is bad sure, but can we remind ourselves of the immigration rate in Japan? It’s low, like really low.
Can we also remind ourselves that they have their own beauty standards that don’t involve a lot of different features and races because their immigration rate is so low.
It’s a whole different ball game if the production of the manga or anime is staged in the u.s, a different country (like banana fish) people should do their research. It’s also another thing if the production is a internationally involved creation, like “Carole and Tuesday” but most manga isn’t that way.
I’m not saying it’s good, but there is a reason, and calling people racist isn’t why there’s a lack of representation.. thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
