Don’t think he’s intellectually challenged. He ultimately created an alternate reality to suppress but also kind of address all the trauma he’s experienced. It’s easier to accept and acknowledge someone else’s trauma than it is your own.
i kinda interpreted it as him not taking anything seriously bc this is all a fake world to him, since we saw him acting less childish in the 1st timeline and irl flashbacks. like if i thought i was in a book id kinda fuck around and not take anything seriously too lol
