I think it's more because of the bad reputation of Tokise. They were involved in a scandal, most people didn't even want to participate, if they won, it could have a negative impact on the reputation of the event, no matter how unjustified it might be.
I interpret that expression as someone who had a regret what they initially said. Because it revealed their narrow views. It's the face you make when something you judge negatively slaps you with something noteworthy of respect. I suggest you read their complete performance. There's no way they're not in the top 5. All of them are high level. They're max out. With the genius composer. Their first win was truly carried by their emotional performance but this time it's backed with real skill. If they don't win, then it's a plot device
I said technique wise too. A lot of their competition have students who have been playing the koto as kids. That's what I meant. I'm not saying they're not good. I'm just saying overall, they're not as good skill-wise individually.
For example, have Chika and his friends play against the other students solo and you can see the difference. Even the grandma who occasionally helps them and is a koto maker has said that their music scores are done in a way that plays to their strengths that people can't tell they're basically beginners in terms of experience compared to the rest of the participants.
Again, I'm not saying they're not good. Heck, what the sensei does is pure magic. To focus on his student's best skill and make it into a masterpiece like this is such a flex. The man is a legend.

If we're talking about pure overall technique and skill, Tokise truly isn't the best. I don't even think they're top 5. The reason why the performance was so good was because of the 'Harmony' aspect of the team that gave it so much gravitas and emotion. For some musicians, that's just one aspect of a performance.
Truly, I'm seeing a scenario where Tokise doesn't win and that breaks my heart (╥﹏╥) But honestly, I won't be too sad about it. Look at where they are now! They've achieved so much! That was really their beat performance yet! I'm so proud!!!
