Bruh I understand you lol. The yuri part was a total surprise like it wasn't even foreshadowed or anything.
Spoiler; when Astaire inevitably defeats the empress and is about to kill her. The empress, unreconciled, rambles on about how MLs mom was a vamp that stole her husband and would always ogle her with those strange, obsessive, smug eyes.
But then Astaire drops a bombshell of a plot twist that his mom never wanted the empress's position but rather, the empress herself. He goes on to explain how he has inherited his mother's twisted way of loving someone, that both of them would chose to destroy the one they love than let anyone else have them.
It is revealed in a few flashbacks that Astaire's mom was believed to be this angelic, kind, pure woman. But in reality she was a total player who had several lovers at the same time both platonic and bed partners. She manipulated everyone in high society with her strong spirit powers to maintain a "pure" reputation.
She first saw the empress in her debut ball (or some event I forgot ) and immediately fell HEAD OVER HEELS for her. She wanted her real bad but also knew it was impossible for them since the empress was married. So she decided on the next best option: Destroy the proud empress.
She started an affair with the emperor quite easily given her astounding beauty and "innocent" visage. Everytime she was with the emperor she would blatantly stare at the empress. The empress thought she was gloating but it was actually obsession (lmao the emperor thought he found one true love but his mistress be salivating for his wife). The MLs mom enjoyed the empress's hate because this was her way of gaining the empress' attention and being close to her.
When Astaire revealed this shocking piece of info, the empress was left speechless cuz everything started making sense. She went crazy screaming "No, no, no!" The whole time. (It wasn't revealed if the empress was regretful or terrified to learn this)
Mls mom was so obsessed with breaking the empress's pride her soul actually stayed with Astaire after her death to ensure Astaire became the heir and not the empress's son.

Oh honey this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Astaire claims that both he and his mother only know this fked up way of love. Which is quite evident from the og novel and why Astaire wasn't surprised by his homosexual tendencies when Kayla told him about the novel.
Major spoiler!!!!
In the extras there's a side story that mentions what happened in the novel world. Apparently all that torture on kayla's brother was true The og kayla despite never showing affection for Franz, ran to save him.
The novel mentions that Astaire kills her and that completely breaks Franz, but the truth was that Astaire kept Kayla alive but she was trapped by that red ribbon and was NEVER allowed to leave Astaire's room.
This Kyla is terrified and begs Astaire to release her brother but he's having fun with these siblings so he manipulates both of them daily. He tells Franz how he fed his sis to the dogs while he tells Kyla how much Franz is suffering and to keep him alive Kyla needs to keep him entertained everyday (Astaire is like 14 or something so there's nothing naughty but remember Astaire can read minds and OG kayla has shitsuro not shuette so she's helpless not to mention never been to the academy so she's always desperately sharing mundane stories in hopes of seeing her brother)
This poor girl was NEVER allowed to leave Astaire's room for years!! (except once or twice a year to see Franz while he's asleep) Astaire grew jealous of Franz getting Kayla's attention and wanted to destroy both of them (like mom like son)
But If I don't remember it wrong I think Rittaus freed Franz and they escaped but Astaire was more terrified at the idea of not having a hostage to trap Kayla.
Sooo long story short Astaire started growing because he hated being shorter than Kayla, and once he becomes the emperor (he's 20? I guess) Kayla is still his flightless canary, never allowed to leave his room for her brother's sake. Plus she had to help him get ready all these years (my lawd) And on his coronation day he like confesses to her in a very domineering manner and kisses her. Kyla is extremely shocked but blushes and possible concedes?!?! (My baby got stockholmed). And Astaire, well, he was not going to let her leave anyway. And the story ended, like bro that's level 100 mindbreak, I cannot breathe. Every love story in that novel was toxic af.
Like imagine constantly seeing your husband's illegitimate child that he had with a crazy woman THAT ACTUALLY WANTED YOU?!?
Astaire's player of a mom fell head over heels for the untouchable empress and wanted her SO BAD she decided to fk her husband instead (lmao that man was a pawn). Her logic was that she'd atleast be close to her and have her hate. Like?!?!?
