um, maybe not? i mean, maybe the same character traits are portrayed in a better way in gls, so maybe that's why u find them okay in there but shoujos tend to sometimes make the female leads have no backbone and no personality. but if u hate female leads who are emotionally strong characters but at the same time are soft and shy, then there's smth wrong i guess.

When it's straight it's usually plays into gender roles that undermine woman as people and just treat them as poor little creatures that need a man to protect them
Tbh for me the main difference between this and GL version is simply that you can see how the shy girl is a proper character and not a brainless cutesy tiny girly who only exist to fuel men's egos ┑(￣Д ￣)┍
I hate soft spoken and shy fls in shoujo and it’s the stereotypical gender roles but I love it in GL I especially love it when one is masc and overprotective while the other is shy but if it’s straight it makes me wanna throw up.
