Literally would have been chill with Daewoo if not for the rape thing. It's kinda sad, really, to see how normalized rape culture is in Korea that it's present in like 70% of it's bl. It's off-putting when you realize this is just seen as another form of sex therefore "sexy", like it's not. That's a fucking crime. I might actually research rape culture in Korea out of curiosity despite how morbid it is...

But following up on Daewoo since I got off topic. His character and plot otherwise WOULD have been super duper interesting! He views himself as a deeply morally gray and without remorse but we as the readers are meant to sympathize with his yearning and ability to do good deeds for his friends. But that feels thrown down the drain when you remember he's willing to rape the guy he loves the most cuz he was fucking horny. It's a contradiction to the point you're trying to make us feel for him. In a bl that wants discuss the good and bad in people's actions you make it hard to understand when a Really Bad Action is kinda never addressed or given any thought to.

    I… never really thought about that… :(

You don't have to research "rape culture" in places like Korea and Japan 'cause I can tell you why it happens often; 'cause women are still horribly oppressed there by men there.

If ya'll would take two muthafuckin' seconds to look into the history of BL/yaoi you'd see it was started by women who wanted a way to explore their sexuality and inner selves. It was also a way to get back at the men who had horribly abused them and kept them from having basic rights.

Also, ya'll crack me up 'cause Daewoo just admitted to murdering people for his own selfish reasons, but ya'll can excuse that just 'cause he nonconn'd a guy who's whole business is deeming who do and don't deserve to live.

    But whatever. Ya'll do you.

I did mention wanting to research in the original post, although specifically rape culture of today's Korea rather than the history of yaoi. I'm curious to whether it differs from other cultures compared to Korea in how it's viewed by the public and media, whether it's demonized as much as it is in America, where I'm from and therefore spoke from that perspective. In the most recent years, or at least with the newer generation, there has been a major push towards consent and actually being more aware that even men get raped.

I can't exactly speak on other women's experiences with handling this sort of trauma, since I handle mine by reading consensual yaoi and yuri to remind myself that there is good. You can imagine though that people like me are getting very tired of seeing these men, fictional or not, rape someone and get away with it with no real consequences. It makes the event feel trivial and more like a kink rather than a crime.

As for being okay with murder, I feel there's a difference between murder in fiction and rape in fiction. It's not very common that someone murders or is murdered (and then proceeds to read yaoi LOL) so it feels more fantastical in a sense. But rape is horrendously common, and it's home for too many people. It feels more real.

I'm from the US and I can tell you murder and rape happen just as often as one another, especially in the parts I live in lol

There are massive sex trafficking rings in Korea run by male kpop idols, male politicians, rich men and even law enforcement. One of the more widely covered recent events involved a group member from BIG BANG where he and other super influential men ran a night club that actively drugged and raped women for years. These types of situations are still all too common 'cause women are viewed as creatures or possessions for men and not as individual human beings.

It's not as common in Japan anymore, but the history behind the origin of BL is still alive and talked about thanks to the women and marginalized people who live there.

Also, CNC is a kink. It's a form of BDSM that is practiced between consensual adults role-playing scenarios they both agree to. Rape fantasies are also one of the most common ones women in the US fantasize about. It takes two seconds of an internet search to learn these things.

You trying to wrap it in some deep, philosophical thinkpiece just makes it sound like you don't believe people should be able to explore these topics ((such as rape, murder and so on)) in a fictional setting. There are literal thousands of BL titles out there in the world. What the women and queerfolk, like myself, choose to explore in these stories we create is for us to decide. You don't get to try and dress it down and judge it just 'cause you don't "morally agree" with the subject matter. Most of ya'll would have Shakespeare, Poe and other prolific, historical writers hanged if they were still alive today.

You can do your lil research tho all you want to try and make it seem like you know better than the artists and writers. To make yourself *feel* better about consuming the "good" stories. Just leave the rest of us alone to do what we want with our own works.

Idk why that one person is being an asshole towards you but I agree with you 100% on everything you said, rape is getting more and more normalized today all over the world especially in the U.S. and Asia, we literally have a whole community on TikTok that’s praising a book that romanticizes rape because it’s “hot” and not to mention the history of it in Asia stemming from the comfort women and high school girls panty vending machines, in Japan and scandals like the burning sun that happened in Korea, even the 70k men in a chat room sharing advice on how to rape women. It’s so bad and is actively getting worst where ppl read/write shit like this and think there’s nothing wrong with constantly adding rape into stories (especially yaoi) and making it seem like it’s “not that serious” when all it’s doing is normalizing it even more

I'm sorry if I'm tired of seeing people either be misogynistic or racist just 'cause a bl contains problematic or just common tropes.

This person was trying to dress up their "curiosity" to mask the fact that they basically just said "why are Koreans obsessed with rape." I explained to them that a lot of times and even the history of BL/yaoi is rooted in the fact that women in these countries have and still are treated horribly.

Seeing as they said they are from the US, I'm guessing that they're speaking from a place of privilege and think that the artists currently living in worse conditions are just morally bankrupt.

I gave them the background and even provided extra points that are literally a 2 second Google search a way. There's no reason for someone to be like "why are Koreans obsessed with rape culture." If someone said "why are black people obsessed with stealing things"-- which is horrendously fucking racist mind you-- ya'll would be losing your shit and wishing death upon the person. But since most of ya'll think it's justifiable to say gross shit to others over art I'm not even fucking surprised that you'd call me an asshole for basically saying "stop accusing Asians of rape."

Do you not know that a lot of these stories are written by women or even queer folk who have been raped by men? I'm sorry if explaining WHY women have used abusive tropes in stories to express themselves or share their experiences makes me an asshole or whatever lol

This person just basically said "all Koreans are obsessed with rape" and ya'll are clapping. Like, it's wild that I'm being painted as the crazy person for being upset that someone was being racist whether they meant to be or not.

Sorry if women want to vent their anger, sorrow and grief sometimes in the form of writing fucked up shit. Sorry if queerfolk want to express their feelings or even share their experience in a way that makes others uncomfortable. It's 'cause that's how we've had to live our entire lives. Lord forbid a couple of drawn, fictional men with no feelings experience a miniscule fraction of that hurt.

    Ya'll are sad lol

I’m a black woman myself, don’t try to bring up the “if someone said this about black people yall would get mad”and you should know in the U.S the statistics that are put out are purely racist in itself so idgaf about ur feelings, and I said what I said, constantly putting rape into stories further normalizes it idk what’s not clicking up there tf? And mind you no one is accusing Asians of all being rapist. Many Asian women themselves would agree that Asia has a massive problem with how romanticized and normalized rape is becoming because IT IS. And yes, women and queer individuals should be able to write stories like this but it becomes a problem when it involves writing sexual themes about children or when ppl add them to the stories when it doesn’t even make sense because it’s “hot” or “not a big deal” let’s not act like women cant be weirdos too

No not really sad lmfao, ur being painted as a crazy person because people are upset that rape is being added into almost every story as an “lol whatever” moment, you can write stories with rape in it to vent ur anger, no ones stopping you but it gets to a point when you are clearly romanticizing it or making it where it seems like it’s okay when it’s not, and not every woman or queer individual who writes yaoi use it as a coping mechanism, there are weirdos out there who think rape isn’t a “big deal”, also just because it’s fictional doesn’t mean some ppl don’t apply it to couples irl unfortunately happened to me where someone told me if “I were to take my girlfriend they’d find it hot” so I genuinely don’t want to hear that “it’s fictional” bs
