They’re doing that on purpose. Since arty can’t see what’s going on, the author is purposely also not showing us what’s going on. I think it’s to shift the narrative from AJs story to Artys but it could just be cause it’s boring. Aj gives blowjobs, gets given drugs and eats and maybe bathes once every few days and sleeps. I doubt he was allowed to do anything worthwhile in the basement and I doubt Warren spoke to him much in the basement either. Warren isn’t the conversationalist type. The pacing is actually pretty spot on for the storytelling we are receiving.
