Justify how? The author is just showing us the back story? You can understand why someone ended up the way the ML did and at the same time still think his actions are wrong. Understanding is not justifying. If there's no true remorse, healing, and proper resolution when the story goes back to the present THEN you can complain about the author justifying his actions
You know it's bad when the keyboard warriors are in the comments pulling it the classic “you just don't get it because you just don't understand his character”. Be so fr its ass, admit it. I remember when this was coming out, and sure the art is good but everything else is not. You can make complex characters, fucked up ppl, and hell even rape in these but the way this story pushes it as though it is justifiable. The terrible things that do happen don't really push the story along and just feel as though they are put there because they need to fill more space. No one is saying that you can't feel bad for him because his backstory is “sad” however the author is pushing it as though it should justify his actions when it's not. There's a difference between “flawed characters” and just had writing. Unfortunately in this case it's just bad writing.
