If the father is so obsessed with Theo, why did he allow him to go to England?
I think the father is actually fixated on Theo's mother (appearance maybe) and wanted someone to fill that void. That's why he used Theo only to murder ppl. Still, it seems that when Theo went abroad, it was then that his father truly began to miss him the most.
