i think he wanted both to live, but the reason why he specifically wanted to keep the fake knight alive was because he had confidential information on truyde (or whatever his name is) bcuz his family worked with him in the past. basically they need him alive to gather intel on the kingdom’s court or whatever they’re called (sorry im so bad at names).

Also, I thought Abel wanted to save the hostage, not the fake knight! Abel, that guy wanted to kill others first. He was also saved once before and isn't even thankful! He doesn't deserve a second chance.
