Not all People who appeared virtuous embodied its meaning. Mugo's puzzle pieces are slowly making it into the right places. They still represent what they represented in human psyche, but I'm convinced sir mugo was the culmination of the evil they gathered from their ugly past experiences. He can act benevolent and kind because he's cold and knew how powerful he is. his actions are based on a whim. He won't show up if it isn't something that delights him.
In Japanese yokai mythology, gods and yokai often came into being just as they are. They never had childhood stages except the stage of innocence when they're still a blank slate and haven't been marred by hatred. Of course, if the entity was born from negativity is a different story.
I trust the well god that mugo's really an evil god. The monster mugo was who he first came to being and was possibly bullied because he was born to swallow everything. Entities who just came into being don't understand other concepts other than the very nature they were born from. Later he matured into jerk mugo, and based from his behavior and trauma response, he was likely harassed and locked up, tortured by some greedy fellas. Then in all the years he lived he matured into sir Mugo who's hiding a vengeful spirit behind a kind facade. He learned to use people as they used him and reigned over them as their god. Since he's not a divine entity as the well god claimed, that could mean he was deceiving this family and had them by the neck. Of course, the family will willingly sacrifice anything to appease him since they're still benefiting from him even on a chokehold.
Something must have happened some time in the past to cause the split. Unless they weren't born as is, all of this speculations could be trashed hahhaha.
For now, i believe the true monster here is sir mugo. And from the way he looked at MC, I bet he was insisting to keep him there not for a good reason. At first, the scene where he appeared in mc's dream as child was like an "aww" moment. Now, I'm thinking it was a calculated move. He must be looking for something in the sacrifices. If they didn't meet the requirements they become food for the young mugo. Sir mugo wasn't a snake for nothing. He's definitely cunning.

Edit: people are saying jerk mugo's the main persona and I think so too. And if he was really trapped and tortured by someone, (ancient people doing witchcraft and enslaving entities for power was nothing new) then Sir mugo's persona became his coping mechanism.
I can't get over the sweets. There's something in the cake. Maybe they gave the same trial to the sacrifices before them and only MC remembered to bring his requests.

It's okay. Even it's not accidental, people are allowed to have different views and opinions. (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
