Well she is quite timid from the start AND she is Japanese, she lives in a culture that constantly remind you that you must not bother other people, even amongst family. If you take into account her personality + the cultural context, this is not that shocking, especially if you take into account that she is still in the mindset that this is a contract and that she must protect her husband's image and bother him the less possible since he is so busy
Girl, I need you to speak. Being timid is one thing, but being a doormat is another. In your thirties and you can't even clap back? Can't tell your "husband" what happened out of fear you'll cause trouble? He's literally asking you to tell him. I expect this behavior from a kid, not a grown woman.
