If he has control over what is accessed in his memory, couldn't he block it from himself? The fact that he shows the trauma could be the reason why he doesn't want to go back and not how he wants to go back. But assuming he wants to come back he may have understood that the one he cares about most needs protection; especially with him thinking he heard the voice of the guide in battle (even though it may have been a trauma based hallucination or such) anyways, interpretations right? I'm curious about the plot and ALMOST going for the novel!
