To me it's more like Vlad is making more progress without his input so he's instead just watching over him. Of course they still do talk, but he probably already knows that Vlad grows stronger quicker without someone holding his hand. It's only in times like the quick advice on the greatsword where Vlad has had less experience that he speaks up during a fight. Although tbh in high intensity fights like that it's best not to chance breaking his focus.
Didnt they change his sword when he was knighted?
