Why do writers feel the need to add a « war episode «  when they know nothing about it ?

Seriously, i think the characters would look more exhausted if they had gone on a shopping spree ? Did they play rock paper scissors to win their battle ?
What about heartfelt reunion ? It’s so anticlimactic that any other reason for a long trip would have been better (〜￣△￣)〜
