Remember he wakes up as the chosen one once he hits adult age. It's not related to the time loop, it's been like that since the first life. It's just that he's usually dead by now in the other timelines.

So basically he's not afraid to die since he'll come back in a few years anyway and thinks it's worth guaranteeing her safety.

Not sure what would happen if he dies after coming back as God's chosen hero or whatever. Probably the loop ends as long as Laila gets to live a full life.
