Wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately I do believe the onslaught of readers traversing into dark stories come from following trends and trying to engage with circles that were never meant to cater to their audience. Pair that with a lack of general awareness (refusing to read summaries, check tags, or peek trigger warnings), and we’re left with thousands of “GROSS I’m so shocked and it’s your fault” comments.
Having an opinion isn’t generally bad, everyone is entitled to one, but when it’s purely negative with no constructive input, it just exudes “priest hands out bibles in front of adult book section” vibes. It creates a strained and shamed community, and makes it hard for anyone, including the author and their general fan base, to come out and engage within the space specifically made for them. Funny thing is, I don’t even really like this story, I just wanted to see what people who did had to say. Instead I’m just bombarded with folks who couldn’t keep their hate boners in their pants.
I’m probably going to be downvoted to hell but guys- It’s slapped with a psychological genre and littered with warnings. Are you allowed to dislike something? Of course. But deliberately jumping into an obviously dark story and walking out like you weren’t completely aware it was one from the title and summary alone is a different kind of consumer entitlement.
If it’s not your speed from the very beginning, just go somewhere else. Theres plenty of lovely non-psychological stories out there, but don’t knowingly jump into something you’ll clearly hate- No one’s forcing you to be here.
