I mean I think this is also a revenge on him as well. Like he took away the think he cared about most in this world and left him to live threw that also knowing it was his fault bc he created the magic for it. (I doubt he thought he could fix it tho, he was short sighted in his revenge
Dunno why everyone is shocked. The whole plot point with Eugene was unresolved and honestly, I get him but he should've targeted Luke not Erinda. I mean, yes she's an anomaly in the world but Luke is the one that turned back time that led to your grandpa's early death. That's why Luke always looked so guilty.
