It's kind of sad how Ben was always trying to get his teacher's attention/affection, but despite his attempts mentor didn't want to get too close with him (for various reasons). They are quite similar and teacher probably didn't want the same fate for Ben. He probably went through a lot, like exclusion, loneliness and hatred towards him based on his appearance and incredible powers. To conclude I assume he deeply cared for him despite being seemingly cold. P.S. I'm still praying for Hero's comeback of course
