It’s a lot actually. She runs away eventually when the ML’s stepmother writes a letter to her house revealing her identity as a slave. The letter was signed by the ML (falsely). So she doesn’t trust him. He eventually finds her and they get together. But it’s the stuff in between that so heart wrenching. The ML as well had a really traumatic childhood

He didn’t mistreat her. He’s more like the aloof type. For most of the novel, I wasn’t even sure he card at all. But then it slowly started. While he didn’t physically abuse her, he did corner her
