ML had to die because if he escaped, the revolution wouldn’t have worked—people needed a symbol, and his death made sure the revolutionary kept fighting. ML wanted to protect his uncle and stop someone worse from taking over. Even if ML got into that carriage, they’d be hunted down, and everything they sacrificed would be for nothing. Basically, there was no happy ending for them no matter what.
Also, I remember at the end Lothaire said that ML doesn't want any bloodshed or war, ML actually cared about his people, maybe if ML escaped, people who supports the revolution, and people who is loyal to the royal empire(ML) will have war amongst them(?). like the only thing that will make the country at peace is HIS DEAD
this is my opinion (▰˘◡˘▰)

It's multiple reasons, not all stated in this manga. First, historically speaking Maximin is literally the most important person that has to die, because even if he is exiled or runs away, there would always be the chance that a foreign nation could invade under the guise of wanting to restore the legitimate monarch to its throne, which would inevitably make the revolution weaker, and the new established order more fragile. Second, in order to act against the second most important person that had to die, the uncle, they would need a legitimate reason, otherwise they would be seen as criminals and usurpers. That is why they had to wait until Robert physically killed his nephew to act against him, cause then in the eyes of the nobles and foreign monarchies they wouldn't look like revolutionaries but people avenging their rulers, which would make their action legit in the eyes of everyone. Maximin knew he had to die because his very existance was undermining the revolution, and that's why he didn't allow MC to save him.
Okay I understand that ML planned everything from the beginning and I knew one of them would probably die (likely ML) due to the tragedy tag. I know and their mutual friend (who MC didn’t know was mutual) though it would be better for the revolution plan of ML let go of MC. I don’t understand why he had to die though, why couldn’t he had gotten in the carriage and be together with ML afterwards? From my understanding, which I’m not sure is even right, he choose to protect his uncle by sitting on the throne instead, but how could the mutual friend go along with that? I really do get the feeling that the friend would’ve been happy if ML got to live a long and happy life with MC.
