I hope the ethereal man's thoughts change, but it does seem it will.
He has seen the destruction of Ebiz when it was on the king's hand, his actions are quite reasonable, to be fair. He only hopes for Ebiz to stand, but he thinks that won't happen with the king being the ruler.
He is a god, not a villain—though his previous actions may have made him look like one, it only looks like it because we have seen the main character's point of view(And maybe also because his awakening is connected to the stupid evil church[?] which I forgot the name of). If you put yourself in the god's shoes... Imagine you see a place's destruction. Surely, you'd want to stop it?
Then, a random person arrives, not from this era, but is influencial enough to change things and also made the king somewhat attached to him. You won't know exactly if he's trustworthy and if he truly wants to change the fate of Ebiz. Would you rather let the person do what it wants? With a small chance of saving Ebiz, but a big chance of not—a big chance where the person ends up changing Ebiz' fate for the worse instead.... Surely you'd want to take things to your own hands and handle it yourself?
Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I simply think that the god's actions is very much reasonable, and it just wants Ebiz' survival. Plus, now that Zhang Li's thoughts show a world that looks better and that he is determined to make it happen, high chance it might change pretty boy's mind ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
Another thing is that he had been generalizing them—that people would prefer survival of themselves than knowledge, and that he can bring what they need. But the girl at the last part countered that belief, which might be another factor to him changing his mind >0<!
