He most likely has gang affiliations of some kind. Maybe he was born into misfortune and ended up there out of desperation or debt. Or perhaps was born into a mafia family?
The prologue insinuated some people were hoping/anticipating an apocalypse as a chance to start life over. Given how important the compound seems to Guwon, how adamant he was stressing to Jinwoo he would protect it, his attitude around the children and the fact he considered their education important, his need for praise, his childlike way of expressing himself/way of speech (so cute), and the fact he’s been quite respecting of Jinwoo (so far), I can only assume he was a man stuck in a gang who just wanted a normal life.
Considering his lack of education, size/strength/proclivity towards violence, his desire for the fancy house at the top of the hill, and his assumption of the leadership role of the compound, I’m assuming he was the muscle/hitman of the gang. In charge of the small fries, but not high ranking enough to enjoy the luxury (pun intended) of expensive things. Or maybe he dealt with drugs, given his aversion to addictive substances.
Love how the author is feeding us his character just by showing how he interacts with the people/ world around him. His values, what he finds important, how he lived before the maggots showed up, we can pick up on so much just by watching the way he acts. It feels incredibly natural because we’re looking at him through the perspective of Jinwoo, so we only know as much as him.
This could be wildly off mark, and whether he turns out to be a big scary softie or an obsessive simple psycho, I’m here for it either way. Can’t wait to see! (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
