She was originally pregnant with twins, Jae won (the now dead brother) and another but she lost one of the babies and it took a toll on her. When she happened to see seo-in in the orphanage she instantly saw the resemblance between him and her son and wanted him. Most likely as a way to fill that missing piece of the twin she had lost
