this is not necessarily true… it depends on the family and the type of guest. haru is just another kid so saving face doesn’t apply as much. and the older brother is just inherently rude so he doesn’t think what he’s saying is “wrong” just very strict and not easy to please.
Honne and tatemae is cultural and social behaviors special to japanese people. If you dont know, i recommend you to search what they mean. It does NOT depend on the family in situations like these. Japanese people would never fight about feelings in front of a guest and it is a fact.
I honestly don't know about those concepts you're talking about but I could resolve your concern by saying that this was not written by a Japanese person, nor Korean, nor Asian. And I'm pretty sure that the author didn't actually search about some topics. Just in case, it's not shade, i just think it's a fact. I think he wanted to have this "Asian/Japanese vibes" but set everything else in the context of his own country.

I like this story but i find it unrealistic how a japanese family is fighting in front of a quest since japanese people are infamous with their non confrontational culture expecially the whole tatemae thing. Like they would never talk about feelings on a dinner table with the family.
