They meant he was acting weird around the teacher! And it’s not something he does normally with others.
i’m usually rlly bad at explaining, but it’s as if it is out of the ordinary for him to act this way. from the chapters before, you can somewhat tell that everyone has to do soemthing in order to stay or else they’ll get booted. the way he’s being so nice is generally odd to them.
