Well I thought up until now it was always only Saintesses, but then God gave a prophecy sort of that the "Saint" will be son of god aka pope. So currently, these boys are all Saint candidates rather than the actual Saint. The reason they said only Saintesses could enter the vault was because up until now there were only Saintesses in their family. The men in the Joshua duchy are weaker than the women, I'm guessing due to the curse.
Dang. Kids in this world must mature (intelligence wise) as fast as puppies!(⊙…⊙ )
How else would adults expect a baby only a few months old to know how to fetch? Plus all the other kids going through such dangerous deadly trials at such a young age.
Also, they keep talking about saintess, yet all the candidates were male?.（￣へ￣）I'm pretty sure they said only a saintess can enter the vault. There was lots of contradicting things. Are things getting lost in translations, or is this one just THAT contradicting? If the mass of contradictions are ignored, this is a pretty enjoyable read though.
