Growing up is realsing that Kou wasn't the bad guy nor "unworthy" of her love, the guy waited years for her, always wrote her name in his books, , never forgot her, dreamed of the day they met, noticed her in the hallway immediately, tried to get her attention for MONTHS and flirted with her in hopes she will like the new him. He constantly stood up for her, saved her out of trouble, protected her, supported her, encouraged her to make real friends, was there for her when she needs him, to be herself and decide what she wants for herself. For him she is his hero, the light of his life and reason to life. Sure he made mistakes, he hurt her but he always strives to do better, apologises, tries to make things right and learns from them. His deepest fear was harming her in a relationship whilst he was stuck in a dark place!!
