From what I read spoilers the history in novel was actually MC and ML real past life. MC "old world'' when he's friend with ML is just product of his imagination, like his trauma response. The current word they are now is their second life. So when he say he feels like he listen real story of real person while talking with 'grandpa' this is ACTUALLY true. Because this is REAL life.
