Shock value. Before it was a bold move that would catch the readers (I remember manhwas from years ago would do it and move on instantly into the plot) but now it's so normalized is plainly uncomfortable

So that somebody who has just started reading knows what to expect, that is 80% sex and 20% plot LMAO

Bl has gotten more and more boring and predictable in recent years

That's the standard way to grab the audience's attention.

like mili said, it's a story hook to grab the audience's attention.

i once read a bl manhwa a while ago, where the mc had a dirty dream in chapter 2 and there was an author's note that went 'i know this r18 scene came out of nowhere but i needed to add one in somewhere in the first five chapters and it didn't fit anywhere else in my storyboard'. which explains some things.

please don't reply to this comment if you're going to say something like 'urgh bl readers are all porn addicts who prioritise sex over a good plot' though. that isn't what this comment is about.

industry standards don't necessarily reflect the perspectives of the consumers or the authors. and even if the reader prefers to read r18 scenes in their r18 stories, what's wrong with that
