I believe the recent events is different from the novel, afaicr rize and cliff married but eventually he got tired of her cuz all she does is spend a lot of money and he didn't feel loved, they devorced/got separated and she was sent away, he moved on, i think fell in love again and remarried, and he apologised to ml and fl
