From the raw chapter(few chapters ahead) and another comment here, yes maximo liked mc since childhood coz he thought he was an omega and had already planned on making him his mate but when mc revealed to be a beta, maximo felt very betrayed and has been taking his anger out on mc becoz to him its mc's fault for deceiving him even tho its his fault for assuming and fantasizing on his own. I think in past too, as time passed that anger just grew and turned into abuse but he also couldn't grasp the idea of mc being taken away by someone else so he took that out on mc again when ml proposed in past. Even in this life (spoiler) next chapter ml will propose and it will be printed on the newspapers and maximo will go ballistic. Basically to some it up, he has fellings for mc but also hates him for turning out to be beta but then also doesn't want mc to go to anyone else.
