The dad is that basic asian dad that from my experience is heavy on the discipline and is doing that for the sake of getting better results, but at the same time cares in his own way. If the dad really hated him why have the custody battle, or get him the phone, and the candies. Growing up my dad was the same when it came to grades, but also bought me stuff he noticed I like. Maybe because I went through a phase of what the mc did to himself, I relate to him more than I would like to
