Brett's hesitation is a sign of hope. It signifies something huge that he does not want to act as if he is in love to Hayden. He does not want to do any act infront of him. Doesn't that mean something completely special(?).
Either way, I'm getting scared for the chapters to come. I absolutely do not want to see Brett being SA'ed and for Hayden to know that fact. That revelation will unleash something complex. Wahhh, I can't wait! I'm excited but scared. Woooooahhh!!!!!
