I think he's the priest from the previous arc that used to accompany novak. The sin explained by him seems like novak's mistaken way of dealing with the 'rebel'

That albert in the last chapter is supposed to represent albert irl historical figure that ended up teaching copernicus (founder of the movement of earth in historical content)
The ending despite being pretty confusing is actually quite beautiful and in line with the theme. That truth and wisdom will live on even if people try to suppress it
