Factor () then whatever those factors are, add them together to get ()x
For example x² - x - 12. Factors of 12 are 4 and 3. When you add together, they have to give -1 which is the constant in front of the x.
Therefore the factors are -4 times 3. When add together it's -4+3 = -1. Hope that makes sense
So when you write out, it's (x-4)(x+3).

WAIT NOT PLEASE CONTINUE THE TEACHING... when I see x² - ()x + () I always use Mode 5 3 on the calculator and mode 5 4 if it was x³.. but in the entrance exams we can't use calculators and I can NEVER solve it without mode 5 3/4
