They are being exclusive. He doesn't want to promise love or romance because he doesn't view those principles the same way others do so and Hayden totally knows and understands that, yet wants to try it with him nevertheless
Fiction aside, being in a relationship is all about communication, understandings, making compromises and finding middle ground agreement when it comes to sensitive subjects, all of it in order to be "happy" (might also call it fun to both sides)
