Am I the only one who hates this?

Passerby-san February 1, 2025 4:55 am

I really hate the direction this is going in. Oren may be a bully and a pompous asshole, but that really doesn't justify what they're doing to him. This makes them no better than Grid/Greed. It doesn't matter if they feed him, they're keeping him as a slave for 27 years. It's literally indentured servitude but worse because he's not even getting anything at the end of it besides his freedom. They could have just scared him for their revenge and put him in his place but 27 years? Jesus fucking Christ that is not the price of a few fish and bottled water. They're acting like he committed third degree murder.

I dont hate it, although the punishment is harsh but he probabably wasnt just a bully to theo but to a lot others too, nany probably suffered under his attitude, bullying leaves long lasting effects so i say that its a good lesson for him to be atleast a decent cat after 27 yrs

Dude, being a bully doesn't justify indentured servitude. That's an insane way of thinking. Almost 30 years of slavery is justified to you just because someone was mean? That's crazy.

There is a difference between being mean and bullying. As someone that suffered through 12 years of school being bullied all the way I can say first hand.
Yes, slavery is a bit too much but I kinda doubt it will be written out in that way. in the end he maneuvered himself in that corner by being stupid enough. I think the author will turn his journey around and Oren will see what an asshole and idiot he was sooner than later by learning from Theo.

It's clear that the author doesn't see any fault with these events as it isn't being acknowledged by anyone in the story and is treated as a lighthearted, justified revenge. The hypocrisy of condoning this while condemning Greed isn't something I think I can get over. I don't care if there is character development. This kind of just ruined the main characters for me.

We already saw this from the start. What they’re doing is basically barter—trading goods for labor. They help Sejun, and in return, as a tower farmer, Sejun gives them food that’s otherwise really hard to get. It’s a fair exchange for both sides.

Greed’s case is completely different. Sejun isn’t deliberately reducing the food supply just to sell it at a higher price. In fact, he’s actually helping the monsters in the tower get a practically unlimited food source.

As for Oren, he’s a bully. We all know that. So, given how things work in the tower, what kind of punishment would actually make sense for him? Giving him counseling like how humans deal with things? Of course not. Monsters don’t have the same moral compass as humans. They follow the law of the jungle—an eye for an eye, a life for a life. Would you rather see the monsters fighting each other to settle their debts?

What Sejun did was the right call. By working together, Oren will slowly come to understand that everyone is equal.

Dude.. barter and slavery is not the same thing. It's clear I'm not getting through to you so I don't want to continue this conversation.

This is good for him, he's developing as a person, his trash father was also an accomplished person, and he needs this development as the future village leader, this won't last forever, theo isn't even torturing him, just making his ass work! So dramatic.

They are getting paid, he just have a lot of debt as of the moment so he needs to pay all of it, and Theo is also teaching him how to sell, all he has to do is to shadow theo and help him sell. Fair trade

Am I not allowed to analyze the media I consume? I am chill, I don't know why you guys are so up in arms with your pitchforks and torches just because I have an unpopular opinion lol.

Crazy house "slavery bad" is an unpopular opinion though. And it's so hypocritical that the main characters are against slavery but that doesn't apply to them I guess. That's not even an opinion, it's a fact.

I’m just chill about it, you analyze it, I analyze it too. It’s just that our literary analysis is different, that’s why we can have a debate, right? It’s just funny though, if you actually read from the beginning of the chapter, it’s super clear that every monster working under the MC gets something they genuinely need. You’re siding with the rich guy who doesn’t care about his people’s condition and even plans to scam them. So it’s fair—Oren scams the MC, the MC scams him back. Plus, there’s no follow-up yet on whether he’ll keep working for years or if he’ll be let go to apply the knowledge he got from Theo and the MC to his people.

It's funny because he's fed, and cared for and is in servitude NOT slavery(lol and they say we lack media literacy), like imagine complaining about this when there's irl sweatshops and even the US prison system that uses unfair labor, but I know this person definitely won't stop supporting the companies that use these systems lol.
