Yes, the colorization is on the X gene, & to get that unique colorization seen in calico you need 2 Xs. It's possible for a XXY male, but that is a rare genetic anomaly (called Klinefelter's in humans--the ml obv didn't have this based on his presentation, but it would've been cool to see ngl)

i know i shouldnt be saying this but calico cats are female. there are some rare cases of male calico cats, which are 1 in 3000.
