i’ll copy and paste what i’ve said to another person who shares a similar opinion as you.
the ML is not a scumbag either. a main character does not need to be prefect and nice from the start. the author has, from the beginning, intended to write a deeper relationship dynamic instead of a sunshine-and-rainbows fluffy relationship, and wrote it such that there is character development for both characters as they try to understand and navigate their newfound feelings of first love for one another.
later, the ML <spoiler>acknowledges that his way to lure MC to his side was wrong. he laments that he feels helpless and keeps making mistakes when it comes to MC. he realises that deep down he had been fearful of his own self changing after meeting and falling in love with MC. when he confesses, he tells MC he was wrong, and that MC is not a “pawn” but rather the “king”.</spoiler> people who make sweeping judgements and thereafter drop the story will fail to appreciate what the author’s dedication to their characters and the romance
