I think mc has a hard time with emotions and love, so although he cares deeply about (and probably loves) his friend he can't process it. So to him, the highest form of "love" is to consume something (in this case his friend) so that it stays with you forever. There's also the beginning of a zombie apocalypse happening, so that brings up a lot of questions about morality and funerals, which also makes mc think about what would be the best way to eat his friend and if he could really do that without hesitation.
I need an explanation because my mind is running circles trying to figure out what's really going on
