Believe it or not todays yaoi is more plot heavy than yaoi from before. It is a porn after all most yaoi used to be pwp or have plot progession faster than you could finish spelling your a to z due to the minimum amount of pages (before webcomic was a thing). Yaoi with good plot usually comes from very established author name which would guarantee them able to publish multiples chapters or even volume of their works thus they able to take their time building the story and even then there used to be at least 1 sex scene per 1-2 chapters
People who wanted the plot would go to shonen ai instead and pray for any god out there the author will post bonus story/doujin that is r18 after finishing the shonen ai

i see what you’re saying, i probably haven’t read enough of the idle times to have a proper opinion. I honestly love shounen-ai but I’m not one for slow burn and for most they take a while to progress so I’ve kind of stayed away from them for a few months.
Am I the only one who can’t stand the sheer amount of unnecessary sex scene in most of the yaoi nowadays. Like I feel like they used to be more plot based. I just read this one called My Boomer Babe or something along those lines and I skipped half the chapters cuz they were straight smut and completely irrelevant to the plot
