The way you worded it leads to misunderstandings. It is only Carcel who smashed statues. He did not become buddies with Emiliano. They will only talk that one time and he will only send a letter to Emiliano once later in the story and that's it. They're not friends and Carcel smashed the statues because he wanted to make a sin to get more memories as punishment. Emiliano was against smashing the statues.
