Funny thing about media is that it can be interpreted differently. While you are interpreting Dan as confused , I'm seeing him as severely stressed. If you wanna get into analyzing we can do that too.
Chapter 57: Dan explicitly states "looking back, i have nothing but regrets" in reference to not realizing his grandma is sick, and for using the spray on JJk (despite it being an accident). Also direct quote: "I feel like everything's my fault." This let's the reader know Dan is in a mental state of stress, and readers can inference that Dan sees himself in a negative light. Thought the chapter, we can see that Dan isn't getting a lot of sleep and is often in a negative head space which further supports the idea that Dan is not 100% good in his mental rn.
Chapter 58: Potato and Dan have a lil chat. Potato expresses to Dan than they know he wasn't at fault and everyone at the gym feels bad, however, Dan says "I appreciate the sentiment, but... i don't want to cause any more trouble for you guys. Especially Mr. Joo." He continues to say "More importantly, I like it better here." As readers, we can either take that at face value, or we can see this as Dan coping by not acknowledging how upset he is so that he can move forward. I like to personally believe it's the ladder half. "And... I'd appreciate it if you could keep it to yourselves that you ran into me here." In other words: even if anyone WAS looking for him, even thought doesn't know, he doesn't want to be found.
Fast forward to chapter 60: Dan asks JJk point blank "So... what are you doing here?" Jj says " That's not something you need to know" shortly after "Come back to work as my physical therapist." IMMIDATELY after, Dan's facial expression is contorted, and to me it looks like shock mixed with horror. Dan responds with "What...? No, I dont want to..." notice how he didn't ask "WHY?" Irl, a lot of ppl respond with "what" and then immediately follow up what they heard as a response, not because they are nessisarily confused, but because they take that moment to process. If he responded with "why?" That's would imply that Dan isn't nessisarily turned off the idea, and is curious to figure out JJk game, however Dan responded with a resound no. "Even if I didn't have my grandma to think about, I really don't have any reason to come back as your physical therapist. I already resigned." This quote tells the reader that Dan is trying to emotionally detach from JJk. While he may have lingering affection, him physically trying to distance himself, and metaphically pushing him away with word that Dan doesn't want to rebuild those feeling and be around JJk rn. Now here's the kicker: None of this implies hatred. All this implies is that Dan wants to kill of the affection to further protect his heart, which is 100% understandable because he has experienced heart break from this man, not once, but twice. Once when he tried his best to give bro a birthday present and JJk practically called his efforts pointless, and second when the spray incident happened.
Present chapter (61): scene when Dan flees to the bathroom after talking to JJk. He enters the bathroom, with an upset look, and IMMEDIATELY he recalls a particular night where JJk screwed him so hard that he felt like he couldn't walk. "Am I really coming down with a cold? I'm having a harder time getting up than usual. I should've just told him not today..." NOW ASSUMING WE ARE READING THE SAME MATERIAL, WE KNOW JJK IS NOT GONNA LET THAT SHIT SLIDE. shit, DAN KNOW THAT HE WONT LET THAT SHIT SLIDE: "no... it's right before his next match, as if he'd show me that type of consideration." Next panel we get a crumpled "used" Kim Dan on the floor, "i wish someone could carry me to bed." Which gives of the idea that he's unloved, not cherished. Next panel, we get kin damn squeezing his arm, a common tactic to pull someone back from a dark thought and into reality. The pose implies he's tense, uncomfortable, and closing himself off. He' looking down with a frown on his face; the frown he had BEFORE the flash back, and he says "when has he ever shown concern for my body?" He is REFLECTING on prior experiences with JJk, and is ACTIVELY UNCOMFORTABLE. The man is stressed.
To summerize what me, myself and I have noticed and interpreted: he has a low self-esteem, doesn't want to bother other people, doesn't want to be found, and JJk throwing himself at him makes him uncomfortable. NOWHERE am I stating he hates JJk.
When I made my initial comment, I (admittedly) poorly paraphrased dan, however an astute reader would've noticed i said "LIKE" before my misquote, which means that it was not a 1 to 1 quote. The emoticon ">:(" while usually implies anger, was just a poor way of expressing Dan's furrowed brows and frown, which he actively has in the panel. My point does not change despite the misquote: I enjoy that Dan is reflecting on past events which is effecting his current decisions to avoid JJk. I enjoy that JJk is consistently an asshole who doesn't understand what he feel about Dan.
You stating "i am spinning the narrative to hate" is blatantly false as I in no way implied that Dan hated Jjk, if anything, I may have implied he was frustrated ir angry. If your interpretation of hate is that shallow, I suggest you read more ヾ(☆▽☆)
when i say this, I mean.
I have grown respect for you. You seem to have read it and yes, interpret it differently!
When I meant spinning a narrative, I was referring to you the reader (generally speaking).
Most readers do their best to interpret the most minor things in this story and ignore the underline tones. In 60, the entire time Jaekyung was calm compared to S1 and though his boldness wasn't really appreciated, no one gave him flowers for basically continuing the story (ex. Saving Dan's life). Him being in front of Dan after month(s), he's actually unsure what to do and wasn't as prepared as he thought he was.
He acted based on what he knows about Dan; He's in financial need and he loves his granny. Not much to work with . So, of course, with that knowledge, he offers money. When Dan declined, Jaekyung put MORE money to be closer to him. Jaekyung is smart but prideful he (along with Dan) are both flawed, for sure. But I do not fully grasp the lethal vemon towards Jaekyung. I guess because I do not put myself in Dan's position, nor do I want to because that seems messy.
When dan went to that bathroom and was like "since when did he care >:(" I went mwah- gold- I love it when a character actually reflects on past events and it effects the course of the plot. I also love how consistently it is shown that jj is emotionally stunted, ESPECIALLY his own head- like it's burn is slow enough that I feel like when the changes start to happen, it'll be so tasty and satisfying.
Jokes and memes aside, I genuinely really like the direction the author is taking, and have high expectations for the payout in later chapters! The characters are amazing and I admire how they have readers give such visceral reactions
