My assumption would be that he might be trying to guide him as a means of trying to wake him. I don’t know tbh, but you also have to remember what he went through in the beginning of the series.
he's guiding him given that he says something like he won't give what shinje wants — which is to kill him. he's trying to make him stay alive (what a way to be revived lol but it's guideverse so..)
