    hoooo boy
okay first of all, I recommend "(insert character element) damage bonus" for all bottle pieces.
Some character's damages are increased by certain attributes like def or hp, look out for those and I recommend getting that as a main attribute for the clock piece. For the hat piece, the best thing to go is either Crit rate or Crit dmg for the main attribute.
Crit rate and crit damage for sub attributes are very important. to explain them, imagine you got an F and your mom boutta throw her chancla
crit rate is the chance the chancla will hit you hard
cirt dmg is how much it'll hurt
Additionally, artifact set bouses fits certain characters. for example, if a 4 set piece set increases energy recharge etc, then it might fit raiden or yelan And it if increases normal and charged attack, it might be better for yoimiya or ayato. It all depends on the character gameplay. For starter players that havent unlocked all artifact domains, I highly recommend 2 piece of whatever artifact set gives the character element damage bonus as the 2 piece bonus and gladiator for 18% atk bonus. But if you really want to build I recommend researching what artifact sets (4 pcs) are best for what character. For beginners I think about 150% crit dmg is pretty good and crit rate really depends.
def is usually useless unless you got characters like albedo whose kit thrives off def
there are also characters who's kits require more of a certain attribute but it doesnt necessarily contribute to their damage.
Take yelan for example, her dmg is based off HP but she still needs energy recharge for better gameplay
Energy recharge is the speed in which burst charges up
elemental mastery is generally recommended for anemo characters as it increases elemental reaction damage and anemo characters often thrives off elemental reactions

Hi the person above explained pretty well imo but if ur a new player DON'T farm artifacts until you are ar45+ focus on leveling ur characters (some 3-4 star sets are good like exile for ER and instructors for supports and you can get them from boss drops ) (if you don't understand some terminologies look to the bottom for the notes)

but if you are ar45+ it depends on which characters you have because each set is specific to a set of characters, like Fontaine (golden trope and marachaeusse hunter) set being good for (most of the) Fontaine characters.

And for a general overview. You can equip 5 pieces of artifacts on a singe character, those artifacts are respectively, a flower, a feather, sands(time piece), a goblet and a circlet.

Starting from the flower, it will always have fixed mainstat of flat HP so you only need good substats (like crit and atk% for most of main dps' and ER and HP for supports), again it depends on which character you are farming for. I.e. A kokomi would not care for crit or atk% since her kit is HP based. On the other hand Arlecchino would only care for crit and atk%. So read your characters talent info!

The feather, again, like the flower will have a fixed mainstat but of flat ATK instead of HP, so you can focus on the substats.

Now it gets a bit tricky because not only do you need good substats for a sands you also need a specific mainstat (like ATK%, ER%, HP% etc.) if your main stat is trash (aka DEF%) or doesn't fit your characters kit. Don't level it. In this case your first priority is the mainstat so even if the substats are good, the mainstat determines if it goes to trash or not.( you can only get ATK%, ER%, HP%, EM or DEF% on a sands BTW)

The goblet, or dare I say the most important piece in a artifact set. This is where you will get the Elemental dmg bonus stat. This will improve your main/sub dps dmg exponentially, and in some case you supports as well. Now for this one you want the elemental dmg bonus that corresponds to your character (I.e. If you are using Xiangling you want a pyro one, and if you are using Clorinde you want a electro one.) the substats are important too but if you manage to get a Elemental dmg sands from a good artifact set you would want to use it regardless of the substats. This, however is EXTREMELY hard to get. Like you have a 1 in 12 chance of getting it. This is why you will see that most of the goblets that people use for their characters are off piece (doesn't belong to the same set).

The circlet is the only piece that can have a Crit rate/DMG main so you would want to have that for a main dps, it can also have the ATK%/HP%/DEF%/EM for your supports, unfortunately no ER% on this one.

Now for the artifact sets. Artifact sets have 2 special effects that activate when you have 2/4 pieces of it equipped. And they can have some crazy effects. Like the natlan one (obsidian) giving an immediate %15 precent DMG bonus for the natlan characters at 2 pc and a CRAZY 40% Crit RATE at 4pc. (again only applies to natlan characters unfortunately). I could sit here and write out what each set does but you can just read them in game (go to you handbook - > domains - >artifacts - > scroll and read whichever one you want. If you write your team here I can give you some recommendations. Some characters have artifact sets created specifically for them, like Emblem of severed fates for Raiden, Vermillion hereafter for xiao, golden trope for frunia. So they will naturally be the bis for that character. But for the start you can get away with 2pc / 2pc sets like the ones that give atk% for the 2pc set effect for main dps' or the ones that give EM for dendro teams like gilded. Some sets also give a 15% elemtal dmg bonus at 2pc (like crimson witch) so you can use those as well!! This is all I can think of atm please ask if you don't understand anything.

    '** ATK% = literally attack stat, ER%= energy recharge, EM= elemental mastery.
