To give the grandpa the benefit of the doubt, Havelock or whatever his name is IS technically a good father to his sons. He clearly loves and cares for his sons to the point that they are arrogant spoiled little brats. He probably sees that he is at least a competent father and thinks that will transfer over into caring for our mc. Now obvi it won't, but in the grandpa's eyes, he is better than Jeffery who can't even take care of himself.
